Welcome to the “Holy Grail” of bird lovers. Karnala Bird Sanctuary is one of Maharashtra’s most precious protected areas, established in 1968 to preserve the incredible biodiversity of the Sahyadri range. Spanning 12.11 sq. km around the base of the historic Karnala Fort, this sanctuary is a lush, plastic-free paradise located just 12 km from Panvel on the Mumbai-Goa Highway.

By Road- Located directly on the Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH 17/NH 66). Private vehicles are recommended for convenience, and parking facilities are available for a stipulated charge.
Public Transport-
Train: The nearest railway station is Panvel.
Bus/Taxi: State Transport (ST) buses from Panvel station or shared cabs can be used to reach the sanctuary entrance.
Note: Ensure arrival early (sanctuary typically opens at 07:00 AM) to beat the heat and increase your chances of spotting rare birds.
Rules
Sanctuary Rules
- Timings: Entry is permitted from 07:00 AM to 04:00 PM. We recommend arriving early to enjoy the best bird-watching experience.
- Permits & ID: All visitors must pay the entry fee at the Forest Department gate. Please carry a valid government-issued ID for verification if requested.
- Plastic-Free Zone: Karnala is a Strictly Plastic-Free Zone. Avoid carrying disposable plastic bottles or wrappers. If you must carry plastic, do not litter; violators face heavy penalties.
- Silence is Golden: To protect the bird habitats, please maintain silence. The use of speakers or playing loud music is strictly prohibited as it disturbs the wildlife.
- No Feeding: Do not feed any birds or animals. Human food is harmful to wildlife and can lead to dangerous behavior from monkeys.
- Stay on the Trail: Visitors must stay on the designated nature trails (Hariyal, Mortaka, or Gaarmaal) or the main path to the fort. Going off-trail is dangerous and damages the ecosystem.
- Photography: General photography is allowed, but the use of flash or drones is strictly prohibited to avoid scaring the birds.
- Prohibited Items: Smoking, drinking alcohol, and carrying weapons or flammable materials inside the sanctuary are strictly forbidden.
- Safety First: Wear comfortable trekking shoes and stay hydrated. The Forest Department is not responsible for any personal accidents or loss of belongings.
- Parking: Dedicated parking for bikes and cars is available at the base for a small fee. Please park only in designated areas.
